Application Process

We want you to feel comfortable with our hiring process. We believe in setting realistic expectations to ensure your journey is as easy to understand as possible.

  • Application

After the job posting closes, all applications will be reviewed by the hiring manager. Qualified applicants will be contacted by HR/Risk to schedule an interview.

  • Interview

After the applications are reviewed, the hiring manager selects the qualified candidates for an interview, that can be in person or virtual. This is your time to show us why you are the best candidate for the job and and why we should hire you!

The interview process can include two or more rounds of interviews and other assessments, depending on the position.

  • Job offer!

    Congrats! You got the job!

Once the hiring manager makes a decision on who will get the job, HR will contact the candidate with a conditional job offer.

The candidate must successfully complete and pass a pre-employment screening, which includes a physical, fingerprinting and reference checks. The City of San Marcos covers all the pre-employment screening costs.

  • Start Date

The pre-employment process usually takes about two weeks. Once the City receives all results and the candidate's full clearance, HR will reach out to schedule a start date.

    Welcome on board!
